My Services for Academic Writers

I work with graduate students, professors, and researchers who need assistance with their thesis, dissertation, journal article, or other academic writing. The academic topics I have the most experience in are education and Christian ministry, and I am well-versed in the specialist terminology and reader expectations in these fields.

However, I have also edited dissertations in such disparate fields as economic history and operations research and an article published in the Journal of Infrastructure Systems. Sometimes a nonspecialist academic editor is best specifically because they can help make your paper more accessible to a wider readership.

I provide many services for academic papers, including copyediting, citation checks, formatting, and proofreading. Here is how these services work for academic authors.

Copyediting

Copyediting is sentence-level editing with comprehensive, detailed attention to clarity, consistency, and correctness, so readers can easily understand your message without distractions or confusion. Writers in the fields of education and Christian ministry benefit from my familiarity with the specialist terminology and research methods used in those fields, and the style conventions specific to the latter one. In other fields, I know how to ask the questions experts would take for granted, helping clarify your message for a general as well as a specialist audience.

I’ll also be checking for conformity to your style guide with respect to capitalization, numbers, abbreviations, quotations, headings and subheadings, tables, and other features of your paper. I also check the completeness and formatting of your citations and references.

I use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature so you can see exactly what changes I’ve made and decide if there are any you don't want to implement. I also use comments to explain why certain changes were made, make additional suggestions, present multiple options, and ask for clarification when needed.

How long it takes to edit a particular paper depends on several factors, including length, complexity, and the level of intervention wanted or needed. In general, a copyedit for a longer academic paper (such as a thesis or dissertation) includes two to three weeks for the first round of editing, while I need one to two weeks for the first round of copyediting a shorter paper such as a journal article. Then you will have one week for your author review. Finally, it will return to me for one week for a second round of editing or the final cleanup.

I will provide a custom proposal with a flat fee for your academic copyediting project. My pricing aligns closely with the median rates documented by the Editorial Freelancers Association.

Citations and References

Citation and reference formatting includes checking that in-text citations, footnotes or endnotes, and bibliography or reference list entries are complete and conform to your chosen style guide. My attention will be focused on the following:

• Ensuring all elements are present and in the correct order for that source type

• Confirming that all elements are correctly styled and punctuated according to your style guide

• Checking that all sources cited in the text are listed in the bibliography or reference list and all sources listed in the bibliography or reference list are cited in the text

• Flagging issues for you to address, such as missing or conflicting information

• Providing more in-depth verification and correction of reference information if needed, and if permitted by your degree program (if applicable)

I work with references in these styles:

• The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition (CMOS 18)

• Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (APA 7)

• A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 9th edition (Turabian 9)

• Client-provided custom style guides specific to a school (such as ACE) or a journal

The timeline needed for academic citation services varies by the complexity of the paper and volume of entries. It is included in copyediting but also available separately. Academic authors can expect one to two weeks for reference editing as a separate service. This service starts at $5 per reference list entry ($100 minimum) and can go higher depending on your specific needs.

Academic Paper Formatting

I format papers according to these style guides:

• The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition (CMOS 18)

• Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (APA 7)

• A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 9th edition (Turabian 9)

• Client-provided custom style guides specific to a school (such as ACE) or a journal

Formatting is included in copyediting but also available separately. The timeline needed for academic paper formatting as a separate service varies according to the length and complexity of the paper. In general, academic authors can expect one week for the formatting to be completed. This service starts at $200 and can go higher depending on your specific needs.

Proofreading

Now is the time to ensure critical readers aren’t pulled away from your ideas by a formatting error or typo. Proofreading is the final quality-control check of both the text and the layout of your paper. For academic paper proofreading, I concentrate on aspects such as the following:

• Fixing commonly confused words and spellings

• Correcting punctuation

• Checking margins, line spacing, font style and size, and paragraph alignment and indentation

• Ensuring headings and subheadings are each styled consistently and correctly throughout

• Comparing figures, captions, tables, and lists to the in-text explanations

I can proofread in Microsoft Word, using Track Changes, or use Adobe Acrobat’s commenting tools to mark up a PDF. Proofreading a PDF is particularly appropriate when you’ve used a program other than Word (such as LaTeX) to write and format your paper. At the start of this service, we will discuss which approach is most appropriate for your situation.

The timeline needed for academic paper proofreading varies based on the length and complexity of the paper. In general, academic authors can expect two to three weeks for the proofreading to be completed.

I will provide a custom proposal with a flat fee for your academic proofreading project. My pricing aligns closely with the median rates documented by the Editorial Freelancers Association.
