Meet Editor Angie McCauley
Hi! I’m Angie, a freelance editor who specializes in making your writing clear, consistent, readable, and ready to publish. When you work with me, you get . . .
A Flexible and Thorough Editor
Every document or manuscript I edit needs something slightly different. I use my knowledge and experience to make sure any text is clear to the reader, adjusting the scope and level of the edit according to clients’ preferences and the needs of the project. If in doubt about a change, I look it up and adjust—questioning more than correcting, staying attentive to recent standards, and pulling out your voice instead of standardizing your language. I always supply my best and most thorough work to every project while focusing on clarity and respect in my client interactions.
My Work and Life Background
My work and life experiences before my freelance career have shaped my expertise and approach to editing. Among other things, I wrote and taught technical courses at IBM, homeschooled my children, served on the board of a private school, learned how to cook primarily plant-based meals using special techniques, and did various kinds of volunteer work. These experiences gave me an excellent grounding in the logical thinking, clear communication, attention to detail, and research skills I now use every day as an editor.
Editing Backed by Training and Experience
I’ve been editing since 2021 and have completed hundreds of hours of training and professional continuing education. Some of my foundational training includes proofreading courses from the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), copyediting courses from the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), a recipe editing course from Melissa Haskin, and a Vellum course from Skinner Book Services.
I’m always seeking to learn more and improve my skills, so I regularly attend industry conferences hosted by ACES, EFA, CIEP, and Northwest Editors Guild, and participate in webinars from these organizations and others, such as Editors Canada (EC), Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Professional Editors Network (PEN), and Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi).
One of the things I love most about editing is the opportunity to learn about many different subjects through working with my clients’ writing. Some of my projects include copyediting, book layout, and proofreading for independent authors; proofreading for a small independent publisher; copyediting thirteen of the eighteen monographs in the Charlotte Mason Centenary series; and editing, formatting, and checking citations in doctoral dissertations in the fields of education, Christian ministry, operations research, and economic history.
Overall, I especially enjoy working with cookbooks, how-to and self-help books, business books, and Christian nonfiction. I also provide proofreading and layout for fiction authors and services for academic writers.
Professionalism
As an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), I comply with its Professional Practice Code, which aims to foster high standards of editing, proofreading, and other editorial work. To attain this highest membership level, I provided evidence of extensive training and experience, passed the CIEP’s editorial test, and submitted references from two clients who were in a position to judge good copyediting or proofreading and for whom I had done more than one hundred hours of work. I always strive to be easy to work with, I have a clear process, and I deliver work products on time.
An Advocate for Your Work
I help writers communicate with readers clearly and effectively, so their cookbooks or nonfiction books are ready for publishing, their novels are ready for distribution, and their papers are ready for submission and acceptance. I love to help writers eliminate issues that can distract readers, so their ideas can shine through. Let me handle the language issues, and together we will make sure readers focus on your unique voice and thoughts!
A Real Person
I am a real person with real skills and a life outside of work. You probably won’t be surprised to hear that I read a lot, both fiction and nonfiction, and listen to audiobooks. But I also love spending time with family, which often involves meals together, board games, hiking or birdwatching, or outdoor concerts. And I cook with whole foods daily and try new recipes often. A real person with real interests and experiences editing your writing—that’s me.
